McCain’s Wife Beating Joke

In an interview to the Las Vegas Sun McCain made a joke that’s getting a lot of attention.  This is from the LV Sun interview.

(Worried about third Bush term as issue and will every ad show you running away?)

You have to convince people that you have a plan of action. They are going to look at people’s record and they should….Bob Dole, a great war hero, was not elected president (but) Americans appreciated his record and love him but he didn’t do as good a job as President Clinton did as to what do for them in the future……

(On why he didn’t choose Gov. Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign?)

I appreciate his support. As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman.

(Why snub the governor?)

I didn’t mean to snub him,. I’ve known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we’ve been good friends….I didn’t intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman.

(Maybe it’s the governor’s approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president?)

(Chuckling) And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago….

You maybe thinking that this is really irrelevant.  I somewhat agree but, its extremely awkward.  First, Gibbons was accused of beating his wife during their divorce fiasco.  Also, its not even clear if he was alluding to Gibbons when he made the joke.  And if he wasn’t alluding to Gibbons, the what was he alluding to and why even say the joke in the first place.  I hear this joke from men all the time when i was growing up so, its not necessarily uncommon to say back then at least.  But I haven’t heard the joke in 3 years at least, so is it even OK to say that joke anymore.  I would think not, beating a wife even in a joke is not good.  McCain first should say what he mean by the joke and then apologize to whoever took it the wrong way.  That’s just my suggestion of this little rift.  For full transcript click here.

Among many of the other stories that I have heard about McCain, I have no doubt that deep down that statement had some truth behind it.

He is known to have a bad temper and has called his wife a C*NT on occasion from what I understand. This guy is truly not fit to be our president.

Don’t all Republicans beat their wives ? Isn’t that just part of their culture ? There’s no story here.

    Well, Donald

I definitely am not saying republicans beat their wives and thus apart of their culture, that would be ridculous. McCain has shown himself to be insensitive towards women. and he did call his wife the C word which is not acceptable.

By they was as I did write that this story is likely irrelevant but it provides and insight into McCain small brain.

I don’t mean to defend McCain — because I’m not — but the “joke” was trying to make light of the loaded question that preceded it… a la “Are you still beating your wife?” Regardless of the answer, yes or no, the respondent is admitting to having a wife and to having beaten her at some point in the past.

Given the circumstances it was a boneheaded response, but it’s not so diabolical.

do you worry about Muslims who are immigrating to the US in large numbers as their religion/culture allows wife beating? did you post any comments condemning or questioning Democrats when at the Tennessee convention they called for the assassination of Bush & Cheney? Or this weeks Democratic disgrace stating he was glad Al Qaeda finally got a chance to see the face of an American leader responsible for fighting terrorism?

Or how about Obama’s remark that if his daughters got pregnant he’d want them to abort rather than be burdened by the mistake? By the looks of your recommended sites I know the answer to these rhetorical questions.

No you don’t know the answer to these questions because your facts aren’t right. Obama never said he wanted his daughters to abort… thats crazy. Typical of someone like you who probably watches Hannity’s America. He was talking about preventing pregnancies by abstinence programs and that the goal is to prevent women from wanting to get abortions. Because he doesn’t want kids to make mistakes and end up as 14 year old parents. He did say “punished with a baby” as people love that sound bite but, you and everyone else knows what he was talking about. We all know Obama doesn’t mean that having a baby is punishment, thats ridiculous seeing as how he has 2 kids that he loves obviously.

Another thing is that if a democrat did say that Bush and Cheney should be assassinated, then I would have been all over it, but, I do current news not something that I haven’t even heard about. Also Muslim immigrant wives being beaten is a serious issue that I written on for college papers, but since it has nothing to do with Obama and McCain directly then Im not going to write about it, I mean we can’t cover everything on this blog. So I suggest you get over it, get your facts straight, and be sure to bookmark this blog, thanks.

If there has been anything that I think Americans should learn from this election is that politicians are not perfect, even thought we sometimes think they are. During this primary season EVERY presidential candidate has said something incredibly stupid. From Huckabee’s “Obama just fell out of the chair” comment to Hillary’s Kennedy reference, it happens, unfortunately.
