All I can say it that this was not a surprise. Honestly, I was hoping he would get Secretary of State, but apparently Obama had other things in mind when deciding on that position. Anyways, Obama had a short press conference today naming Bill Richardson as Secretary of Commerce. Here’s the video of the press conference including the questions by the media. Also, Obama came to Richardson’s defense when a Latino reporter asked about a certain newspaper’s insinuation that the choosing of Richardson as a consolidation prize for Latinos. Obama also defended the importance of having a Secretary of Commerce. Anyways, here’s the video,

theres talk that the hispanic caucus wants to see more latino appointments to the cabinet..do you think it will happen?
Maybe one or two more, but I think once we start choosing people based on their race, then its downhill from there. I would love to see more diversity but I don’t wanna see any old person get the position based on some arbitrary reason. That’s basically what we had with Bush, he appointed friends.
There’s only 15 cabinet positions, and Obama has already filled half of those positions. Im sure the overall white house staff will be diverse though. Right now there’s not even that many Latinos in prominent positions to even be considered. We still have a long way to go in America as far as race relations. Right now Richardson and CA Senator Gil Cedillo are the only Latinos I could think of that would be available for Obama to pick. But either way, Obama should pick the best people for the job no matter what their race.
