Oh, I’m sorry in advance as this isn’t a long post about policy, polls, or how the republicans are ruining themselves.  I just got finished watching the C-SPAN video of Pres. Obama going to lunch ordering cheeseburgers and speaking with patrons.  I was just so excited for the people working there, they seemed so happy.  I think the only one subdued about his visit was the lady from Ireland and some people that walked in front of the camera to make their way over to the food counter.

Most Disgusting Attack On Sotomayor Ever!

You may have thought you’ve heard every attack from the conservatives about soon to be Supreme Court judge, Sonia Sotomayor, but this one is rather vulgar.  Nevermind my own issues with people talking about women’s “issues” in public.  In an effort to smear Sonia Sotomayor as a racist, conservative talk show host Gordon Liddy basically smeared most women.  He mentioned her “cycle” as being a reason of concern.  Heres a clip from his radio show, via Think Progress,

ok, if this is going to be a new low for the republican party then this is just bad.  I don’t even think Limbaugh would say this.  And I hope he doesn’t.  This shows the lack of sincerity for women on the GOP side.  I mean, why is this suddenly an issue now?!  Lets just all, republicans and democrats take time to pray or hope that this line of attack won’t become mainstream.  The bad part about it is how serious Liddy was when he was saying it?  I might have been a nanometer less concerned if he was making a joke!

Limbaugh Calls Sonia Sotomayor a “racist”

Hmm…I know most of us saw this one coming, right?  Of course we did.  Since I do see this as a festering attack on Sotomayor from other conservatives, why not start with Rush Limbaugh’s comments.  In an effort to make his party fail, Rush Limbaugh did the obvious, and that’s call President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee a racist who is in favor of Hispanic women and opposes white men.  Obviously this is not the case but Limbaugh thinks so.  The following is from The Hill,

Rush Limbaugh called Sonia Sotomayor a racist today and said he hopes she fails to win confirmation.

“So, here you have a racist,” Limbaugh said on his show today. “You might want to soften that and you might wanna say a reverse racist… She is an affirmative action case extraordinaire and she has put down white men in favor of Latina women.”

Limbaugh seems to be referring to a speech Sotomayor gave in 2002 about the role of gender and ethnicity in judicial decision-making.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” Sotomayor said at the time.

Sotomayor has also ruled to uphold an affirmative action policy in which the city of New Haven gave firefighting positions to minority candidates who scored lower than white candidates on a qualifying exam.

“I mean, do I want her to fail? Yeah,” Limbaugh said. “Do I want her to fail to get on the court? Yeah, she’d be a disaster on the court. Do I still want Obama to fail as president? Yeah–AP, you gettin’ this? He’s gonna fail anyway but the sooner the better so as little damage can be done to the country.”

I see nothing wrong with Sotomayor’s statement.  The statement even makes sense if you were to generalize.  People who have been though a certain experience are better equipped to make conclusions on that experience, then a person who hasn’t been though that experience.  And though I don’t agree with affirmative action as it stands today, I definitely wouldn’t go calling people racist just because they agree with the policy.  Instead of calling people racist why doesn’t Limbaugh ever give a substance reason behind his ridiculous remarks.  Wanting the President to fail is something I think he’d call treason if someone said they wanted Bush to fail.

Republicans always try to blame the democrats for making things into a race issue.  Yet, once Sotomayor was named, the first line of attacks on Sotomayor included how she views the role of race and the fact that they think she isn’t “smart enough” for the job.  Um…yeah, and while completely forgetting the fact that they voted for a C student, Bush, to have the most important job in the country.

I’m not saying this isn’t a topic to be discussed, but it’s not being discussed in a mature intellectual way.  Also, why do republicans feel this issue of race needs to be addressed so quickly, and in a harsh way, especially when there’s other cases that Sotomayor has made decisions on which had nothing to do with race.  If this is the issue republicans need to bring up to “rally the base”, then they need to step back and look at how shameful the party has become.  Either way, Sotomayor most likely will be confirmed due to democratic majority so, this uproar over Sotomayor will only hurt them in the long run by festering divisions and behavior of intolerance amongst the republican base.

Web Watch: The Daily Caller

Tucker Carlson, ex-CNN and MSNBC show host will be starting a new website similar to HuffPo and Drudge Report.  I’m assuming it will be more like Drudge Report in content yet similar to HuffPo in mechanics or how the site functions.  Usually on Web Watch posts, I do a screen shot but the site won’t be up until a week or two.  It will be called The Daily Caller.  The site will obviously lean right and be a news outlet.  Though I probably won’t use the site as a new source for this blog it will definitely be interesting to see if it can be hefty competition for Huffington Post.  If Carlson’s cable news career is any indication of his success then I doubt the site will be competitive.  As I do with most new websites, I’ll be looking forward to seeing this site.  For Carlson’s sake, I would hope it doesn’t become as annoying and childish as the Druge Report and snarky in nature as the Huffington Post can be sometimes.  Here’s excerpts from The Hill reporting on Tucker’s new site.

“We are a general-interest newspaper-format style site,” Carlson told conservative bloggers at the Heritage Foundation on Tuesday. “There just aren’t enough people covering this administration and telling the people what’s going on.”

“Tell the truth, and be accurate,” Carlson said of the venture’s goals. “It’s very important to live up to the basic standards of journalism.”

Carlson said that the site’s reporters would share in the profits based on how much traffic is drawn in by their work. He said the site would seek to “drive” the news, similar to the Drudge Report, the Huffington Post, the New York Times, and other major news outlets. (The site’s motto, Carlson said, is “every seven minutes,” and seeks to be “even faster than Drudge.”)

“It will not be a forum for discussing the future of the Republican Party,” Carlson explained. “There are forums for that conversation. I’m interested in that conversation, but it will not take place in our site.”

Republicans Already Attacking Sotomayor: Talking Points Released

The RNC made a tiny mistake today.  Probably with their excitement to attack Pres. Obama and his Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor.  They mistakenly released the talking points against Sotomayor which the press was able to obtain.  Here’s some of the talking points, via The Hill,

o Until we have a full view of the facts and comprehensive understanding of Judge Sotomayor’s record, Republicans will avoid partisanship and knee-jerk judgments – which is in stark contrast to how the Democrats responded to the Judge Roberts and Alito nominations.

o To be clear, Republicans do not view this nomination without concern. Judge Sotomayor has received praise and high ratings from liberal special interest groups. Judge Sotomayor has also said that policy is made on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

o Republicans look forward to learning more about Judge Sotomayor’s legal views and to determining whether her views reflect the values of mainstream America.

President Obama on Judicial Nominees

o Liberal ideology, not legal qualification, is likely to guide the president’s choice of judicial nominees.

o Obama has said his criterion for nominating judges would be their “heart” and “empathy.”

o Obama said he believes Supreme Court justices should understand the Court’s role “to protect people who may be vulnerable in the political process.”

o Obama has declared: “We need somebody who’s got the heart, the empathy, to recognize what it’s like to be a young teenage mom, the empathy to understand what it’s like to be poor or African-American or gay or disabled or old-and that’s the criterion by which I’ll be selecting my judges.”

Additional Talking Points

o Justice Souter’s retirement could move the Court to the left and provide a critical fifth vote for:

o Further eroding the rights of the unborn and property owners;

o Imposing a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage;

o Stripping “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance and completely secularizing the public square;

o Abolishing the death penalty;

o Judicial micromanagement of the government’s war powers.

So, the talking points seem to be what we should expect from the GOP.  The same old lines of attack.  These attacks are less about Sotomayor as the majority of the talking points about her seem to be of the “getting to know her better” nature.   The talking points show there will be more attacks Pres. Obama.  Either way, Sotomayor is most likely to get nominated and the attacks on her and Pres. Obama is just so the GOP can show off to their base and keep votes of disgruntled republicans.  Conservative group called, The Judicial Confirmation Network, released this statement attacking Sotomayor as a left wing activist judge.  Also this might be a sign that conservatives main line of attack on Sotomayor will be that of racial preferences in judicial decisions, which is probably not an area conservatives should venture in.

Judge Sotomayor is a liberal judicial activist of the first order who thinks her own personal political agenda is more important than the law as written. She thinks that judges should dictate policy, and that one’s sex, race, and ethnicity ought to affect the decisions one renders from the bench.

“She reads racial preferences and quotas into the Constitution, even to the point of dishonoring those who preserve our public safety. On September 11, America saw firsthand the vital role of America’s firefighters in protecting our citizens. They put their lives on the line for her and the other citizens of New York and the nation. But Judge Sotomayor would sacrifice their claims to fair treatment in employment promotions to racial preferences and quotas. The Supreme Court is now reviewing that decision.

“She has an extremely high rate of her decisions being reversed, indicating that she is far more of a liberal activist than even the current liberal activist Supreme Court.”

It seems by the majority of attacks on Sotomayor from the GOP and conservative activist groups that they will try to portray Sotomayor as a “liberal activist” judge.  They problem is that theres little about policy in this debate, and if there is no policy to back up republicans “liberal activist” claims then their efforts go to waste and become ineffective.  If this process is to involve integrity then the GOP needs to attack on substance.  My opinion is that they can’t and I’ll be happy when Sotomayor finally gets confirmed.

Update:  Apparently Mike Huckabee was expecting someone else to be on the courts.  Ben Smith pointed out that Mike huckabee’s original statement named a Maria Sotomayor.  It has since been corrected, but c’mon!  If you attack someone, at least know the whole name of the person you’re attacking.  I’m sure this was a general statement that was prepared for whoever Obama picked.  If you’re going to attack political opposition, at least be creative!  Here was his original statement,

The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama’s campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric. Sotomayor comes from the far left and will likely leave us with something akin to the “Extreme Court” that could mark a major shift. The notion that appellate court decisions are to be interpreted by the “feelings” of the judge is a direct affront of the basic premise of our judicial system that is supposed to apply the law without personal emotion. If she is confirmed, then we need to take the blindfold off Lady Justice.—

Pres. Obama Nominates Sonia Sotomayor To Supreme Court

The news came today (Tuesday).  President Obama made the announcement that Sonia Sotomayor was to be his pick as to be on the Supreme Court.  She was one of the most talked about people on the short list that Obama might pick so it might not come as a surprise to some.  I am indeed happy she was picked as her record proves she has common sense, empathy, and knows the Constitution.

She was a federal judge in New York.  During the Sotomayor’s speech she mentioned her life growing up.  President Obama, definitely made the right choice in my opinion to not only choose someone who is first, the best choice.  If she is confirmed, she’d be the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court!  The fact that she’s a woman and Hispanic definitely helps to add diversity to the Supreme Court.  Republicans have openly voiced that they will go after whoever President Obama nominates for the Supreme Court.  I highly doubt that Sotomayor would not get confirmation considering the Democratic majority.  Republicans picking a fight over this nomination could alienate a growing segments of the population.  By most standards she would be a great addition to the Supreme Court.  In case you missed it,  video of Pres. Obama announcing Sotomayor.
