Republican Protesters Go Overboard, Immaturity On Display

Posted on

Some people can argue their points intelligently, others don’t know how to argue their points so they yell and cause disruption. This is from Politico,

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to temporarily suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.

Within an hour of the disruption, police were called in to escort the 59-year-old Democrat — who has held more than 100 town hall meetings since he was elected in 2002 — to his car safely.

“I have no problem with someone disagreeing with positions I hold,” Bishop said, noting that, for the time being, he was using other platforms to communicate with his constituents. “But I also believe no one is served if you can’t talk through differences.”

Bishop isn’t the only one confronted by boiling anger and rising incivility. At a health care town hall event in Syracuse, N.Y., earlier this month, police were called in to restore order, and at least one heckler was taken away by local police. Close to 100 sign-carrying protesters greeted Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) at a late June community college small-business development forum in Panama City, Fla. Last week, Danville, Va., anti-tax tea party activists claimed they were “refused an opportunity” to ask Rep. Thomas Perriello (D-Va.) a question at a town hall event and instructed by a plainclothes police officer to leave the property after they attempted to hold up protest signs.

The interesting part is that these people may not even be from the state they’re protesting in.  Many are being bused into states to protest congressmen and make a ruckus.  To me, these people aren’t helping their cause, they only look crazy and immature. I don’t know of anyone that would want to be part of a movement that’s this filled with whacked out lunatics on the right.  This mob like mentality needs to stop.

Lou Dobbs Ratings Fall By 15% Since Promoting Birther Conspiracy

Posted on

Looks like people aren’t really in the mood to listen to Lou Dobbs’ conspiracy theories.  Sorry, but people don’t go to CNN for vast rightwing conspiracy and idiocy…that’s what FOX News is for.  The following is from The NY Observer.

By contrast, during the first two weeks of the month (July 1 to July 14) Mr. Dobbs averaged 771,000 total viewers and 218,000 in the 25-54 demo. In other words, Mr. Dobbs’ audience has decreased 15 percent in total viewers and 27 percent in the demo since the start of the controversy.

Arguably, interest in cable news has slumped across the board since early July when attention over Michael Jackson’s death was still at a fever pitch.

But, that said, Mr. Dobbs’ ratings over the past two weeks, during the height of the “birthers” controversy, are also down significantly compared to his overall numbers during the second quarter of 2009 when he averaged 769,000 total viewers and 222,000 in the 25-54 demo.

In summary, if Mr. Dobbs’ affinity for “birthers” is a ratings ploy, it’s a pretty ineffective one.

But, Lou Dobbs can’t stop kissing up to the birther now or else it will look like he was doing it for the rating.

Cash For Clunkers Program Shows Progress But Needs Tweaking

Posted on

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) who voted for the Cash For Clunkers program but only because it was politically smart, is now graciously admitting that him and other republicans were wrong about this program.  He said it’s working better than he expected.  The dealerships are selling cars and in some cases running out of cars to sell.  He also said the program behind the scenes need some tweaking.  I definitely agree with what he’s hearing which is that there’s a lot of paper work.  Here’s his appearance today on Fox News Business,

Too bad there aren’t more republicans on TV admitting they were wrong about the program.  Hopefully this program can be extended, it will suspend soon.

The Detroit Free Press has an article about the impact of the program.

Update: Dems in congress to add another $2 billion to the program.  The program still live on til next Friday.

Edit: Hoekstra voted for the program

The Beer Summit

Posted on

President Obama invited Gates and Crowley for beer at the White House.  Special guest was Joe Biden.  Not much in the way of footage to show.  Only less than 2 minutes worth of video.

For those that don’t know, Prof. Gates was wrongly arrested for no reason by officer Crowley.  Prof. Gates suggested it had something to do with it and the media blew the story way out of proportion.  Obama called what Crowley did stupid and felt bad so he invited both Gates and Crowley to the White House for a beer and a chat.  A chat about what, we really don’t know for sure as there’s no audio of the conversation.  In my opinion, since this week we found out Gates and Crowley are actually related, I wonder if Obama would host a family reunion of sorts…just a suggestion.

Update: Crowley’s statement after the beer chat,

“We agreed to move forward,” Crowley said later when asked if anything was solved. “I think what you had today was two gentlemen agreeing to disagree on a particular issue. I don’t think that we spent too much time dwelling on the past. We spent a lot of time discussing the future.”

Poll Shows The 32% Want Palin To Stay Home

Posted on

These numbers are from the recent Fox News poll,

About a third of Americans think the best job for Palin is homemaker (32 percent), while nearly one in five see her as a television talk show host (17 percent). Vice president of the United States comes in third (14 percent), followed closely by college professor (10 percent), with president coming last (6 percent).

Republicans think the best job for Palin is vice president (27 percent), followed by homemaker (18 percent), talk show host (14 percent), president (12 percent) and professor (7 percent).

More Americans have a negative view of Palin than have a positive one. While 38 percent say they have a favorable opinion of her, 51 percent have an unfavorable view. Even so, her ratings are better than those of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: 29 percent favorable and 47 percent unfavorable.

Well, I just wanted to post the poll results because I was rather surprised.  First, no matter what you think of Palin, the job of “homemaker” shouldn’t even be a possibility, we know she’s not going to just sit at home.  Though, I would be happy is she doesn’t enter politics, to me I think she’d make a good radio show host.  I don’t know where people got the college professor thing from.  She has never proved she could teach anything, people can hardly understand what she’s saying in her speeches.  Her career in politics was over as soon as she quit her job and made that rambling speech.  She could recover, but I just don’t see it right now and this poll sort of validates that reservation.

Does The Country Need Another Colin Powell Moment?

Posted on

I’m referring to the moment that Colin Powell went on Meet The Press and endorsed then candidate Barack Obama.  Here was a man that no matter what happened in his career, Americans respected him.  He is one of the moderate voices of the republican party.  In my opinion, when he endorsed Obama during the campaign at the height of these mob-like McCain-Palin rallies, when Obama’s patriotism was being questioned, it really opened up people’s mind and was a turning point during the campaign and it definitely got Obama back on message.

So now it seems like we’re going right back to that point during the campaign where people are playing the race card and thus the fear card, a lot of misconceptions, protests are starting to go overboard, politicians on the right are overtly supporting fringe movements (ex. birthers).  I’m not saying Colin Powell should go out and give a speech.  I’m saying that maybe there needs to be a moment where someone on the right with much respect stands up and gracefully put a end to none sense.  I have no idea who would be a good voice to speak on this and get the country back on track.
