OFA (Obama for America) held a strategy meeting. If video of the event becomes available then I’ll post it here below. You can however, read his remarks and the questions asked on the White House Blog. So, this strategy meeting was to discuss health care reform and how OFA grassroots organizers can help get the word out about the truth of health care reform. Here’s some key notes that I have gathered from the meeting and think they would be helpful to those spreading the word about health care reform and to those seeking truth about the health care bill.
When asked about a compelling message to tell people when talking about the need for health care, his response was,
- Point out that the current health care system is unsustainable. Health costs are up and employers wont be able to provide health insurance to employees.
- No one is forcing anyone to take the public option.
- By providing competition this will cause health care insurers to provide better services. They will cover pre-existing conditions, wont drop consumers from the coverage.
- Cost saving over time.
- He mentioned his recent appearance on conservative radio show with host, Michael Smerconish. A woman called in thinking the whole plan was about the public option. So, more people need to know about the plan.
He was asked about the lies being spread around about health care. He reiterated that we just need to keep putting the truth out there. The lies:
- Death Panels – LIE!
- Covers Illegal Immigrants – LIE!
- Government Takeover – LIE!
- Come Between You And Your Doctor – LIE!
Mentioned that he doesn’t want private insurance companies or government bureaucrats coming between you and your doctor. And to quote him exactly on his statement about the end of life provision,
There was a provision in the House bill that very sensibly said, you know, a lot of people towards the end of their life, they haven’t prepared with things like a living will, they don’t understand what their options are in terms of hospice, and we should reimburse people if they want that counseling. Voluntarily. If they want it, that’s something that Medicare should reimburse for. It shouldn’t just be wealthy people who get good counseling and information about how to handle their affairs during a very difficult time.
So that voluntary provision that permits reimbursement, which, by the way, Republicans had supported previously — this was previously considered a bipartisan concept — a Republican senator, former Republican House member, introduced a even — a much more aggressive bill on this issue in the prescription drug bill passed by the Republican members of Congress; they had a similar provision for terminally ill patients. So this used to be just a sensible thing that everybody could agree to — suddenly became death panels, and scared — scared Grandma. (Laughter.) And it’s just irresponsible.
When asked about what more to tell people when they want to know who’s going to pay for this and about employers dropping them from their employer based health care. His points were,
- 2/3 of the bill is already paid for
- reallocation of funds that are being wasted elsewhere in the system and using it in an efficient way.
- over time the costs will go down because of the efficiencies of the system and cost saving measures.
- Provisions already to prevent employers from taking about employee based health care from their employers to send them to the public option.
- For small businesses that do not provide insurance or are paying too much, they can provide insurance to their employees by buying into the system to lower their costs and provide insurance to their employees. Because, right now, private insurance companies charge more to small businesses than larger businesses.
These are just a few points made and clarified, there was much more. You can read the whole remarks and get more facts by clicking on the links below.
