You’re not surprised…are you? Well to those who do not know, flight 253 went from Amsterdam to Metro Detroit on Christmas. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to set off an explosive device but a nearby seater pounced on him and thus prevented a deadly situation.
How was Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab able to get on the plane with a common explosive device that authorities said is easily detectable? That’s a good question to ask over in Amsterdam and Nigeria. If he passed screening at Nigeria’s airport then most likely he would have not had to go through extra screening at the Amsterdam airport. Unfortunately it was reported on CNN that other passengers thought security at Amsterdam airport was lax that day. Even if it wasn’t Nigeria is not known for having good security at their airport.
How is Pres. Obama responsible for this situation that took place overseas in another country’s airport? That’s a question to ask republicans since they’re claiming that to be the case.
First, Rep. Peter King came out and compared Pres. Obama’s response to that of Bush flying over Katrina. Really? Sorry to tell Rep. King that knowing the facts before giving an impulsive speech with little substance is Obama’s style. But, suuuure, Rep. King wants Obama to make a speech before he knows all the facts…of course he would, cause it’s the way Pres. Bush did it! He also suggested that Pres. Obama dropped the word “terrorist” therefore, that’s why Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was able to get on the plane to commit a terror attack. I guess full-body scanners, metal detectors and x-rays can’t do their job unless the word “terrorist” is written on the bomb.
Then, Sen. Jim DeMint thought this was the perfect time to be the best republican he can be and bash Unions. He thinks unionization is the problem with airport security. Did he ever think that if unionization was somehow worsening airport security, that this would have never happened? Ya know, seeing as how the security breach happened in Nigeria and Amsterdam. Notice how he also threw in Gitmo as well. Would un-unionizing US airports make since anyways? I’m not the biggest fan of unions from a political standpoint, but without unions there would be high employee turnover, low wages, less skilled workers…no one would you want that at an airport. Anyways, here’s Sen. DeMint going off-topic, not being relevant, and politicizing the terror attempt.
Rep. Hoekstra (R-MI) thinks it’s “fair” to blame this issue on Pres. Obama.
It would be great if Pres. Obama can be “all-knowing” and watch over and be at all the embassies we have all over the world. Unfortunately, he can’t and I would suspect he’s not up at night monitoring the hundreds of people on the No-Fly and Watch list and screening each one individually all on his own. Hoekstra is obviously trying to use this as a political issue because from where I’m sitting, this is clearly not his fault. If anything let the investigation actually happen as to why Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab wasn’t put on the No-Fly list. Either way, the investigation would not show that Pres. Obama was responsible or could have done anything differently.
Also, if this whole thing is Pres. Obama’s fault…then should he get full credit for the ZERO lives that were lost? And by republican standards…should Pres. Bush be responsible for the 3000+ lives lost on 9/11? The answers to both those questions should be no.
