Republicans Failed At The Health Care Summit

Posted on

This was supposed to be a substantive discussion on improving the health care reform legislation.  Unfortunately, the republican party didn’t get the memo that they need to present ideas and not campaign rhetoric.  It constantly consisted of republican members telling lies and Pres. Obama having to be like an adult and teach these kids a lesson.  Case and point, John Boehner who wants to keep bringing up the lie that the bill funds abortion.  How many times do we have to go through this?!  Health Care Reform does not fund abortions, it’s not in the bill, it can’t be in  the bill because it’s federal law that abortions not be covered!  But like always, Boehner has little to offer so he runs to his little black book of GOP talking points.  Here’s the exchange between Obama and Boehner, later on even Pelosi called him out for lying.

Like mentioned before on this blog, John McCain could not stop campaigning during the summit.  He only spewed talking points to benefit himself because he knows the republican base he needs doesn’t care about substance.

Next up and the last example of failure was Eric Cantor.  As always, he brought his favorite prop, the long health care bill.  It was highly unnecessary.

It’s really a shame that Pres. Obama has to tell republicans that bills are long and yes, there’s a lot of words and stuff.  I know the GOP doesn’t like to read because it might cause them get facts mixed up with their talking points, but c’mon.  Just read the bill and you might have better ideas to contribute.  Here’s more of the exchange between Pres. Obama and Eric Cantor,

Again, very little substance but instead what we have gotten from the republicans were a replay of last year.  In my opinion, this is only proof that most of the GOP is unwilling to work with democrats and therefore they need to get the bill through with or without republican support.

It’s a shame, that even considering that some republican ideas are in these bills, that they are unwilling to compromise and vote for a bill that will save thousands of Americans from dying because they don’t have health insurance.  A bill that will not allow insurance companies to rip off their customers because there is no competition. A bill that would save employers money and not take as much from pay checks to fund employer based health care.  Unfortunately, democrats are dealing with facts while republicans want to continue with their talking points.  It’s pretty obvious who cares about their personal gains instead of the American people.

McCain Opps For Talking Points At The Health Care Summit

Posted on

Fortunately, Pres. Obama shut that crap down with, “We’re not campaigning anymore, the election is over”.  Here’s the exchange between Pres. Obama and his 2008 opponent John McCain (R-AZ),

Apparently McCain didn’t understand that this was a health care summit where they discuss health care and present ideas on making the bill better.  But, maybe since McCain has a tough challenger in his state, he can’t get out of campaign mode.  He didn’t present any ideas, unfortunately and his only goal seemed to bash the President and score political points.  Though, I wouldn’t blame him, I mean, if I didn’t have any ideas to contribute, I’d probably be off topic too.

Indeed…

Hey, all

I’ve been kindly invited by Sensico to post occasionally. While I’ve achieved some notoriety in political blogging circles over the last 5+ years, I’ve never made the A or even the B list.

But I hope to post some original political content here in the near future. Thanks again for having me.

Is The GOP Weakening?

Posted on

Now that it’s 2010 the Obama administration seems to be stepping it up in terms of their approach to the GOP.  Pres. Obama did the Q&A with republican house members that showed how least helpful they have been to the democratic process.  Before that was the State of the Union where GOPers couldn’t even stand and clap on most of the issues that made sense.  Then Pres. Obama gave a townhall blasting the republicans inability to work with him on issues that they used to support, thus proving their obstructionist attitude.

Obviously Pres. Obama has proved his point and the republican party is successfully being labeled obstructionists (as they should be).  Recently the GOP has balked, probably in their attempt to prove they’re not obstructionists.  The GOP has held up many important Obama administration appointees in an effort to hinder the administration.  Politico reported that the GOP has balked after Obama threatened them with recess appointments,

At a White House meeting with bipartisan congressional leaders on Tuesday, Obama warned that he would make recess appointments if the logjam over nominees wasn’t broken before the Senate left for the Presidents’ Day break.

“Mitch, this is unprecedented,” the president said, gesturing forcefully on the Cabinet Room table, according to aides. “If you don’t move any, I’m going to do some [recess] appointments.”

The 27 confirmations mean no recess appointments will be needed during this break, top administration officials said. Recess appointments, which a president can make when Congress is not in session, are temporary and generally last to the end of the year.

…..

Democrats say that McConnell blinked. Republicans contend that the list shows they’re not obstructionist.

Considering that republicans could have done this sooner, I see this as a major balk on their part.  Which, isn’t bad, but it leads me to think that the criticism of their obstructionist behavior is getting to them.  Then, today it was mentioned that 10 percent of republican house members are retiring.  Pretty sure most of the seats are in republican districts anyways.  But one has to ask themselves, if the GOP is weakening, trying to update their reputation, or just having a bad start politically this year.  I think they’re weakening.  They are finding out that their obstructionist label is only helping them among their small base.
