Frog Used To Mock Opponents Of Arizona’s Immigration Law

Posted on

Apparently, frogs are really helpful at selling political positions.  Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer employed a frog puppet to sell Arizona’s immigration law and mock opponents for not reading it. Here’s the video.

Luckily for this frog, Arizona’s law does not include those who are green.  Oh, but don’t you love the out of context foolery taking place?  Did Holder really take a definitive position on Arizona’s law? In the actual clip, he didn’t take a position.  And previously, he only expressed concerns about the bill based on reports.  Here’s Rep. Ted Poe, same guy that compares illegals to grasshoppers, questioning Holder during a committee hearing that wasn’t even about the Arizona law!

From, Wash. Times,

“I’ve just expressed concerns on the basis of what I’ve heard about the law. But I’m not in a position to say at this point, not having read the law, not having had the chance to interact with people are doing the review, exactly what my position is,” Mr. Holder told the House Judiciary Committee.

This weekend Mr. Holder told NBC’s “Meet the Press” program that the Arizona law “has the possibility of leading to racial profiling.” He had earlier called the law’s passage “unfortunate,” and questioned whether the law was unconstitutional because it tried to assume powers that may be reserved for the federal government.

This clip of Eric Holder was from last week, assuming he has read the bill by now, I wouldn’t find it hard to believe he’d think it’s still unconstitutional.  Let’s actually READ what the ACTUAL law says,

B.  FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE PERSON’S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).

Oh, I’m sorry, so are supporters of this law really think this is constitutional? Clearly the law allows enforcement to be able to pull over “suspicious people” to check immigration status.  Seems pretty clear to me that the people not reading the bill are the people who support it.

Here’s the actual bill if you’d like to read for yourself:

Video: Cop Beats Innocent Latino Suspect, Yells Racial Slurs

Posted on

Oh, what’s this? There’s a such thing as an “innocent” Latino in America?  You wouldn’t think this considering the way they are currently being treated.  This happened in Seattle.  The police got a call and the suspects were Latinos who were committing robbery.  Unfortunately, they got the wrong suspect.  But, before he was let go, he was kicked in the head and yelled racial slurs.  Here’s the video,

I’m actually not staunchly against racial profiling, but this is a case where racial profiling went wrong.  Fine, they were told the suspects were Latino, so it’s understandable, they would search for Latino males.  The issue is that racial profiling enabled this cop’s racist views to be acted upon.  He probably wanted to do this to a Latino for a long time and he sure got the perfect opportunity to do it.  Now, with that said, the officer did give a tearful apology for his actions (starts at 1:25).

I personally do not care, there’s no excuse for this and the other officers that just stood by and did nothing should also be punished in some way.  People are forgetting that in America, “suspect” does not mean guilty.

Obama Picks Kagan For Supreme Court, Republican Foolery Begins

Posted on

Just in case you haven’t heard, President Obama picked Elena Kagan to replace retiring supreme court justice Stevens.

Elena Kagan is great choice all around, her record is fantastic, something you would look for in a Supreme Court Justice.  But, this doesn’t stop republicans for making something out of nothing.  As noted many times before on this blog, the republican party is all about obstruction and getting nothing done.  This mean even coming up with lame excuses or attacks that could possibly stall her confirmation on the court.

Right after Kagan was announced, the RNC came out with this statement. But, instead of attempting to attack Kagan, they defend slavery *facepalm*

Republicans are questioning Elena Kagan’s ties to a liberal icon and the nation’s first African-American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall.

In its first memo to reporters since Kagan’s nomination to the high court became public, the Republican National Committee highlighted Kagan’s tribute to Marshall in a 1993 law review article published shortly after his death.

Kagan quoted from a speech Marshall gave in 1987 in which he said the Constitution as originally conceived and drafted was “defective.”

Marshall cited in particular the definition in the original Constitution to slaves as representing three-fifths of “free Persons” when counting the nation’s population. That reference was rendered moot with the ratification, following the Civil War, of the 13th and 14th Amendments abolishing slavery and granting full citizenship to all people born in the U.S.

Kagan quoted him as saying the Supreme Court’s mission was to “show a special solicitude for the despised and the disadvantaged.”

“Does Kagan Still View Constitution ‘As Originally Drafted And Conceived’ As ‘Defective’?” the RNC asked in its research document. “And Does Kagan Still Believe That The Supreme Court’s Primary Mission Is To ‘Show A Special Solicitude For The Despised And Disadvantaged’?”

The Republican national chairman, Michael Steele, also used Kagan’s tribute to Marshall in a statement responding to her nomination.

Oh, so, agreeing with Thurgood Marshall for this reason is wrong?  Counting people as 3/5th of  a person isn’t wrong?  Really? I’d think anyone that doesn’t agree with this either racist, silly or like the GOP, just really stupid.

Honestly, with her stances on abortion and holding terror suspects without trial, she seems like a middle of the road pick to fit both some conservative and democratic views.  But, the GOP doesn’t care about that, they only care about holding this country back.

New McCain Ad: Complete The Danged Fence

Posted on

John McCain isn’t (was never) known for his great campaign ads.  I for one have made fun of a couple if not more of his 2008 campaign ads.  This one is called, “Complete The Danged Fence”.  It’s about showing his compassion on the immigration issue Arizona is having.  It starts off pretty nice, just some guys talking about illegal border crossing, crime, etc,.  This is the cheesiest ad McCain has ever made.

We need more ads like this :)

Decrease In OffShore Drilling Support

Posted on

This chart was put together by EnviroKnow by the data is from Rasmussen.

Please keep in mind that, given Rasmussen’s tendency to produce conservative leaning results (see: here, here and here), the levels of support shown aren’t necessarily accurate. What they do show is that support for offshore drilling has plummeted in just the past few weeks.

This is good news for a number of reasons (even though the current situation is sad).  One of which shows that voters are seeing the outcome of what can happen when offshore drilling.  Obviously, they see with the BP Oil Spill, that there’s grave environmental dangers.

Not everything comes with a clear cut answer and solution.  We can’t just say we’re for offshore drilling without coming up with solid solutions on how to make it safe.  The ironic part is  Cheney’s fingerprints are all over this oil spill crisis. This guy just won’t stop screwing over America.

Regardless of this being BP and Cheney’s fault, we have to deal with this crisis and make sure it never happens again.  With support in offshore drilling dropping, this is all the more reason to make sure the climate bill this summer does not permit offshore drilling.  I’m just happy to see that support across the board for offshore drilling is dropping.  I don’t think conservatives really have a viable excuse to oppose the climate bill, most Americans notice the problem and think a solution should be done.
